Removal versus grinding
Grinding leaves a hole of chips. Extraction pulls or digs the stump and the larger roots that come with it. Extraction can matter for a foundation, a pool, a driveway base, or a grade cut. It is heavier on the lawn. It can be unnecessary if the only goal is to stop hitting the stump with a mower.
Searches for tree stump removal, root removal, and “tree and stump removal” are pointed here when the stump itself is the problem. If the tree is still standing, start with tree removal and say the stump should be included.
When extraction is discussed
- The stump is in the footprint of new hardscape or a structure.
- A surface root is displacing a walk and grinding the flare will not reach the problem.
- The remaining wood is loose, tipped, or already half out of the ground.
- You do not want a chip pit where the stump was.
Extraction next to a tree you are keeping can damage that tree’s roots. That risk should be part of the review, not a surprise.
What changes the work
- Stump size and how much root flare is visible.
- Soil, irrigation, and anything buried. A locate is not optional near utilities.
- Access for a machine versus hand work in a fenced yard.
- How much soil must be put back, and whether sod or grading is in scope. Grading is not assumed.
- Disposal of the stump. A green root ball is heavy and dirty.
Cost phrases such as stump removal cost and tree root removal cost are common. This page will not invent a Tampa average. The list above is the estimate.
How to ask for a review
Choose stump removal on the form. Say why grinding is not the goal. A photo description helps: “two-foot oak stump, three feet from the driveway, chips not acceptable.” If you are unsure, say so. The review can still recommend grinding when extraction would do more harm than the stump.
Limits
Removing a stump does not include repairing irrigation, replacing a fence, or pouring concrete unless that work is written into a separate agreement. It also does not include a permit strategy for the tree that used to stand there.
